Jon (00:51)
And I'm Jon We did it! This is another season somehow wrapping up. Clock it.
Kristy (00:58)
I know.
Yes, we did. seven books, lots of tears, mostly from Jon
Jon (01:04)
Not wrong.
Kristy (01:06)
But before we dive in, I did want to say that up front, this episode is, unlike our others, completely spoiler-free. So if you haven't listened to all of the episodes from season five yet, or if you haven't read every book, you are totally safe here. Jon (01:28)
that's usually supposed to be my line.
Kristy (01:31)
Yeah, well, can't have all the fun.
I don't know, someone else said so.
Jon (01:36)
They said so. It's always they.
Kristy (01:39)
I know. But before we get into that, thank you so much to everyone who has listened to this season.

Kristy (02:08)
Yes.
Jon (02:09)
Okay, so we covered seven books. There's
Kristy (02:12)
Yep.
Jon (02:13)
no spoiler-free summary. There's no spoiler alert, nothing like that here. So no whoosh, because there's no spoilers. Nope.
Kristy (02:17)
Is this gonna still have a whoosh? Aww.
Jon (02:21)
Let's dig in. What do you got for me?
Kristy (02:24)
So last season you said you really appreciated that we covered a lot of new authors. So that was a big focus for me in this season. There were two specific books that I knew I wanted you to read. And those were authors.
that we had read before and they had new releases coming out this year aligned with our podcast dates. And I added those to the lineup and that left me five books. And I made a very conscious effort to make sure that we were reading authors that were new to you. couple authors that were new to me as well.
So I was just really happy with some of the conversations we had. I felt like some of them went in different directions and brought up topics that we hadn't covered before and hadn't discussed. so I think when we think about season six, that'll be something that I'm still thinking about. But
for this season, seven books, right off the bat, what was your favorite of the season?
Jon (03:17)
I really kind of struggled answering this question because I didn't know if it was what book did I get through the fastest. Does that equal my favorite, but not necessarily?
Kristy (03:25)
Nope. Yeah.
Jon (03:28)
So I think my favorite book this season may actually have been Whistler.
Kristy (03:33)
Ooh.
Jon (03:34)
I think it was just the right attitude of a book at the right time. It a
good feeling book when there's so much other heavy shit going on in the world
Kristy (03:44)
Yeah.
Jon (03:45)
and around us that it was just a good heartwarming story that I didn't know I really needed.
Kristy (03:49)
Yeah.
Jon (03:50)
So that's probably what I would have to say. Though it was it was it was a real debate going on in my head
Kristy (03:55)
Yeah.
Jon (03:55)
for which one, you it wasn't a rom com, which has been from the last few seasons. so there's that. But
Kristy (03:59)
It has been the last few seasons. Well, we only read one
this season, and I think some of the other seasons we read a couple, so to be fair.
Jon (04:06)
That's true. Yeah.
And there might be a slight bit of recency bias there. Like if I go back and think episode one of this season was way back in middle of July. So which is kind
Kristy (04:16)
It's yeah.
Jon (04:18)
of crazy.
Kristy (04:18)
if you're only listening to this in podcast room, you can't see my finger pointing, but I have all the books for that we read stacked up on my shelf behind me. Yeah.
Jon (04:25)
Sitting behind you, yeah.
Kristy (04:27)
And I had a moment I was looking at them, I'm like, The Night We Met, like we did that this season? That seems so long ago.
Jon (04:34)
Long ago.
Kristy (04:35)
And it's kind of crazy. I mean, we were we re release every other week. this is our eighth episode. We did seven books. So that means it's sixteen weeks
Jon (04:42)
Yeah.
Kristy (04:42)
ago. that not possible. Not possible.
Jon (04:44)
I know, I know, for real.
What about you? Which one of these seven books topped your list this year?
Kristy (04:51)
Yeah, I definitely agree with you. To me, when you read a book really fast doesn't mean that it's necessarily your favorite. It can mean that it's your favorite, that you just really enjoyed it. But I would have to agree that Whistler was my favorite. I mean, I
Jon (05:04)
okay, nice.
Kristy (05:05)
didn't debate between the one I think you're talking about, although that one was a hundred percent a five-star read. I debated between another one that I felt just like had a lot depth in. I really like the story, I really like the
Characters, and it's one of those
Jon (05:19)
Which one?
Kristy (05:20)
the Pirate Queen.
Jon (05:21)
okay.
Kristy (05:21)
When you just think about like the length of that story, the research that went into that story, knowing the parts
Jon (05:27)
Yeah.
Kristy (05:28)
that are true, the type of things that Grainne had to overcome in her lifetime in that period of time, the richness of it. it was so good. But
Whistler for all the reasons you were saying, it is a story that I think a lot of people read need to read right now because the world is really heavy and everything feels
Jon (05:48)
Doom and gloom. Yeah.
Kristy (05:49)
Yeah, like I don't even know how to
say it without without it being doom and gloom Like there just
Jon (05:54)
Yeah.
Kristy (05:54)
from my standpoint, there feels like a little bit of hopelessness. And I know that is not true. I know that like what we see in the media is a small fraction of all the good that is happening in the world. But
Jon (06:06)
Yeah.
Kristy (06:06)
this was just such a heartwarming story. the relationships, the I yeah, there's the just so much.
Jon (06:15)
Yeah. It was very good.
Kristy (06:16)
I don't wanna yeah, I
don't wanna keep talking about it and give anything away because this is definitely
Jon (06:19)
Totally.
Kristy (06:20)
spoiler free, but
Jon (06:22)
I think anyone listening to this episode, if they hadn't listened to that or if they hadn't read this book yet, like since we both called it our top pick for the season, I would say r move it to the top of your T B R, yeah.
Kristy (06:29)
Yeah, move it to the top of your list. Yep.
Ask for it for Christmas if you need to.
All right, so which book actually surprised you the most? Either better or worse than maybe you expected going into it?
Jon (06:44)
So this this one's funny to me to answer because they're all surprising because I have
Kristy (06:49)
Yeah.
Jon (06:50)
no idea what any of them are about when you give them to me. So I don't
Kristy (06:53)
Here read does.
Jon (06:54)
yeah, basically. So I'm like, that was a surprise. I had no idea. but I I think upon reflection, I think the one that probably surprised me the most, I'm gonna say, was Wild Dark Shore. geez.
Kristy (07:07)
Stop taking my answers.
Jon (07:12)
I think it was positioned when we were going into it as thriller or a mystery or a something like that. And so I may have went in with a slightly skewed perception of what this one may have been about. we listened to it on a
long ass road trip between DC and Detroit, half the book there, half the book back, basically. So I think that played into part of the experience. But yeah, really enjoyed it, but it was definitely different than I thought going in.
Kristy (07:42)
I agree. it is marketed as a thriller. And I talked about this on the episode. When I think of a thriller, my heart's racing. I have anxiety. I can't flip the pages fast enough. I need to know what happens. I'm cringing on the inside. And that book wasn't that for me. The book was good,
It's not a thriller in my opinion. It definitely is like shrouded in mystery and there's some
weird things going on. So I would say that my expectations weren't met in the regard of how I thought the book would be and how it was, but also the setting was very unique and unexpected
Jon (08:19)
Yeah, for sure.
Kristy (08:22)
And then also like the idea of a seed bank was something I was not familiar with. So that was unexpected to me to learn about that. And then because again, I'm a crazy person, go read up on it afterward and try to like understand it. So it did not meet my expectations. Someone said to me that it was unlike anything she had read before. And I would agree with that. I think the setting's very unique. If you're not familiar with like seed banks and what they're what they do, that could
Surprise you and so when I say my expectations were different, like it wasn't in a bad way, it just was.
Jon (08:52)
Yeah, same. And I think that it was unique in a way that the environment and the island in the book played such it was almost a character in and of itself, which I thought
Kristy (09:01)
Yeah.
Jon (09:01)
was a really interesting thing. You don't always get that in every narrative. So
Kristy (09:05)
Yep. Okay, I'm reading this next question. I think you're gonna have the same answer for me as well, so we'll see.
Jon (09:11)
Geez
Kristy (09:13)
Who is your favorite character from this
season, or maybe one you're still thinking about?
Jon (09:19)
I think I might it's isn't a single character, but I think it's
Deb in April from The Burning
Side. I think Deb's character in particular, the mother in that story, stuck with me. just all the knowledge bombs that she was dropping along the way in that book were just
Kristy (09:37)
That's a good way to put it.
Jon (09:39)
were just really pretty impactful. We talked about them at length on in the episode
Kristy (09:43)
Yep.
Jon (09:43)
for that one.
And and just that story in and of itself being very relatable story, family dynamics and relationship struggles and like just very real that, you know, we talked about how we could reflect on parts of our history and relationship with one another in that story. So I think as far as characters go, those sat with me the longest because they felt so relatable.
Kristy (10:06)
Okay, so you actually have a different answer than me and I'm very but now I'm like, yeah, Deb was amazing. She was throwing knowledge bombs around.
But my favorite was Eddie Triplet. I love Eddie. I want
Jon (10:17)
yeah. Yeah.
Kristy (10:19)
him to be also my stepdad or grandpa or uncle or just next door neighbor. I don't know. just thought he was the sweetest man.
Jon (10:28)
Yeah, he was a really great character.
there were a lot to choose from this season. I waffled between actually the Salt family from Wild
Kristy (10:37)
Mm.
Jon (10:37)
Dark Shore and Deb from Burning Side. similar reasons, just family dynamic trauma that they were dealing with individually, how the island played in a role in like their healing and their journeys and so those are the ones I was kind of waffling between for this question, but
Deb is pretty great.
Kristy (10:54)
Yeah, there are so many great characters. Even when I was thinking about this question wouldn't say this one's my favorite, but
Annie from Kin as just a memorable character because you read her story and my heart just like broke for her.
Jon (11:07)
I think that's a good way of putting it. There were a lot of impactful and memorable characters this season.
Kristy (11:11)
Yeah, absolutely.
Is there a book from this season that you've thought about since we recorded? Maybe something that's stayed with you a doesn't even have to be maybe a whole book, but maybe there's a moment in a book you can say a book.
Jon (11:24)
I think similar to why the characters that I picked, The Burning Side probably stuck with me the longest. all the characters from that book and the journeys that they went on, the marriage struggles between April and Leo and just that whole life journey and yeah, I think I would I would still choose that one. what about you?
Kristy (11:43)
I think that there's moments from each one, you know, that stick out to me. And, you know, I've already
Jon (11:50)
That's fair.
Kristy (11:50)
I've already named, a couple of like in Wild Dark Shore that it was a setting I wasn't familiar with and a concept I wasn't familiar with, and you know, the remoteness of that, and I have thought about that. And then the setting in Her Last Breath I mean
Jon (12:05)
yeah. Woo.
Kristy (12:06)
I still get creeped
out by that. And like, nope, not not for me.
Jon (12:09)
But yeah.
Kristy (12:11)
Not at all for me.
Jon (12:12)
I mean I might even say like going back to The Night We Met too, I could answer that because that book was a right person, wrong time trope, which
Kristy (12:21)
Yeah.
Jon (12:21)
you and I could very much relate to. And we talked about that also in the episode. So
Kristy (12:25)
Yep.
Jon (12:25)
you're right. They're definitely, I think, pretty memorable moments across all
of them this season.
Kristy (12:30)
Definitely moments from each one that have struck me in different times.
over the you know, the course of the last couple of months as we've been reading them.
Jon (12:38)
Yeah. Which is probably why we love books.
Kristy (12:40)
Yes,
So rolling into the next question, we did cover a lot of ground this season as Romance, literary fiction, thriller, historical fiction. Did this season change or shape what you're looking for a book?
Jon (12:55)
really threw the kitchen sink at me this season. I think what culminated from all of these stories that you shoved in my face
Kristy (13:04)
excuse me.
Jon (13:06)
was that there were especially the middle few very character-driven books and over the course of the season I have
widen my definition on what that really means.
Kristy (13:18)
I love a character driven book. This character th this book nothing happened.
Jon (13:25)
Yeah. man,
Kristy (13:25)
How many times did we say that?
Jon (13:28)
too many to count. So I have redefined what that means. I like well developed characters, characters you can sink your teeth into and feel believable and have like a
Backstory or whatever it might be, but I I have learned that I definitely still need like a through line through
Kristy (13:46)
Mm.
Jon (13:47)
that. Like I really enjoyed Kin. but it was like I don't want to go so far as to say it was biographical or autobiographical, but it was just a stor story of their lives. And it wasn't, I don't want to say just a story of their lives, because their lives were very like
Kristy (14:02)
mean there was depth to it, but yeah, it was. It it there was.
Jon (14:03)
meaningful in depth, yeah.
but there wasn't like a murder being solved or an island was, gonna sink, or you know, whatever it might be. So I learned about that. I also learned that the whole short chapter, long chapter thing is also very real. Cause some of these books' chapters were long. And I'm like
Kristy (14:18)
Yes. Yes.
Jon (14:22)
I felt for the kind of reader that I am,
I felt like I had to commit hours at a time to read them or listen to them because there was no good stopping point in like the middle of half these chapters. So,
Kristy (14:33)
Yeah.
Jon (14:34)
anyways, I don't know if I really answered that question. but I think what shaped me about what I look for in a book is well, I I shouldn't say say short chapters, but short chapters are nice and
Some kind of like
plot line, I guess,
Kristy (14:50)
Yes, on the short chapters.
Yesanne. Which which
Jon (14:53)
Yeah.
Kristy (14:54)
again was your f Yes Anne, baby?
Jon (14:56)
Yeah.
Kristy (14:57)
Which again was your favorite book of the season?
Jon (15:00)
I forgot what I said already. What was it? No, just kidding. It was Whistler, which was also a character-driven book.
Kristy (15:03)
Which book had the longest chapters?
Jon (15:06)
And what?
Kristy (15:07)
Which book had the longest chapters?
Jon (15:09)
Whistler was pretty long. Kin was pretty long. Pirate Queen was pretty long.
Kristy (15:12)
I think it was a Whistler like Yeah.
Jon (15:15)
Yes. What's your point?
Kristy (15:17)
so Whistler had long chapters, but it didn't take away from your enjoyment of it.
Jon (15:20)
Yes.
Kristy (15:21)
So I think there's a balance there. Like if a story is really good, long chapters are okay. It's sometimes those long chapters when it the story's not moving that
Jon (15:30)
Yeah.
Kristy (15:31)
I think hurt the narrative.
Jon (15:32)
would agree that. but what about you? I mean, anything this season change or shape how you look at books or look what you look for in a book? It's a little bit different of a question for you because you are
Kristy (15:42)
Yeah.
Jon (15:42)
such a more robust
Kristy (15:44)
I just read more. And I don't mean that I just do. And I read more than you and I'm the one making you you read the books. But
Jon (15:50)
Yeah.
Kristy (15:52)
I will say that like not just this season, but this podcast have made me think about how I choose books, how I think about books, how I reflect on books.
As I'm reading and thinking about what we will talk about in the podcast, or what questions I want to ask, or I'm bookmarking spot in the book that this would make a really great question, or I'm curious what Jon
Jon (16:16)
Sure.
Kristy (16:16)
thinks about this. So the season or the podcast in general has made my relationship with some of these books different in that regard. And
We read different authors this year than I had read before. So not only as I mentioned, like we it was a big focus to bring in some new authors, but they weren't just new to you, they were new to me. And these are popular books and we have made it a point on the podcast to cover books that are popular on Bookstagram and Book Talk because
Those are what people are reading. Those are what we want people to listen to. But also
Jon (16:45)
Yeah.
Kristy (16:46)
it doesn't mean that they're not new to us. It doesn't mean that everyone is reading them. It doesn't mean that every book is for every person. So we try
Jon (16:53)
Totally.
Kristy (16:54)
to have a good mix and to
diversify what we're reading.
Jon (16:57)
My mom told me that she actually listened to the Whistler episode twice. Yeah.
Kristy (17:01)
Ooooo
Jon (17:04)
So that was kind of fun. It was good. It it wa it was a banger. I don't think it was that episode. I don't remember which one it was,
Kristy (17:05)
I mean, it was pretty good. It was a banger. Was that the first time you you said that? I don't know.
Jon (17:14)
but yeah.
Kristy (17:16)
All right, so I'm ninety-nine point nine nine percent sure I know your answer to this one, but for listeners who may not have heard that episode or be familiar with this book, which book would you say was the most page turner from the season?
Jon (17:31)
night we met.
Kristy (17:32)
yeah, but
Jon (17:33)
No. I only said that so I could, use the point zero one percent and say that you were wrong. you're you're not wrong. I know. It's yeah.
Kristy (17:39)
I wasn't wr I'm not wrong. I have a lot of knowledge bombs too, along with Deb.
Jon (17:45)
no, there is no question that this season's most page turning book was Her Last Breath by Taylor Adams. think I finished it in like a day and a half.
Kristy (17:53)
You finish
I think you finished it in a day.
Jon (17:56)
Yeah, it was like
So good. And short chapters, which helped.
Kristy (17:59)
It might
have been like that you started it at night and finished it the next day, but it was within twenty four hours.
Jon (18:05)
Crushed it.
Kristy (18:06)
if you haven't listened to that episode or you haven't read this book, if you are a thriller person, this is your next thriller. This book
Jon (18:13)
Yeah.
Kristy (18:13)
is so good. If you are claustrophobic, but don't mind being like totally creeped out, like this is your next book. This was one that I had never read Taylor Adams. So back to Wild Dark Shore.
That book is marketed as a thriller, and I've already said what the the bar for a thriller is for me. That's maybe a personal thing, but that's how I feel. So when we read Wild Dark Shore, I'm like, it wasn't actually a thriller, and our favorite genre is thriller. So I'm like, I need a real thriller for this season. So I had
Jon (18:44)
Yeah.
Kristy (18:44)
another book planned and I punted it to put Her Last Breath in.
I wanted a book that was released this year. I wanted an author that was new to you. It wasn't necessarily new to me, but new to you. And I just like was searching releases and thrillers and I came across this one, read the synopsis, totally fucking creeped out. And I'm like, this is the book. And
Jon (19:06)
Yeah.
Kristy (19:07)
luckily it was great. Cause I can say that
Jon (19:09)
Yeah, it was.
Kristy (19:11)
I can say that now. But if it would have been not a great one, it probably would have been a crappy episode. But
it was so good. you can read this book in a day. You will want to read this book in a day. Yes. Yeah.
Jon (19:20)
You will want to read this book in a day. Absolutely. I
a hundred percent agree with that.
Kristy (19:25)
Okay, so back in season four, we actually covered seven books that season that had all been adapted to film. So of the books we read this season, which one would you like to see most adapted to film? And then there one you think would be better suited for a limited TV series or mini series instead of film?
Jon (19:45)
yes and yes.
I think I would really like to see Wild Dark Shore as a film. I think I would
Kristy (19:52)
Ooh, yeah.
Jon (19:53)
like to see the moody environment and just kinda like visually it might help bring some more of the mystery or thriller piece that was maybe missing the mark and
from the book.
Kristy (20:05)
That's a really good point.
Jon (20:07)
what point? The visual piece of it?
Kristy (20:09)
Yeah, that maybe it would we would have that thriller feeling if we're visually seeing you know, seeing it. And again, I've said this on the podcast, like I have aphantasia, I can't visually form pictures in my head. So maybe that was lacking for me in the book and a a visual experience would make that more thrilling for me.
Jon (20:28)
Yeah, would maybe build some of that tension or or
Kristy (20:30)
Yeah.
Jon (20:30)
carry some of that tension, I shouldn't say build it. so that's probably what the one I like to see as a film. And I think a miniseries I'd definitely want to see the Pirate Queen as a
Kristy (20:39)
Mm.
Jon (20:39)
series. Just big old Irish ships from the fifteen hundreds and Irish accents all over the place and yeah. Hearing people say fec
Kristy (20:46)
The Game of Thrones theme song is playing in my head.
Fecking Galway.
Jon (20:54)
So I think th those would be my answer. I I I would absolutely watch those. What
Kristy (20:58)
Yeah.
Jon (20:58)
about you?
Kristy (20:59)
I agree that Wild Darkshore would be a great film. that's probably I think the best answer. My, and I like the
Jon (21:05)
Mail it.
Kristy (21:07)
I like the Pirate Queen. I agree. I think that would be great.
Jon (21:09)
Nailed it.
Kristy (21:11)
I also think that Her Last Breath would be a really great miniseries. I think every episode could start with And this is not a spoiler, like
this is on the the jacket. So I'm not gonna give anything of that away, but like her in the hospital bed with the detective, and then the rest of the episode could be in the cave and all that happens there. I think there are a lot of points in the story that get in on cliffhangers for each episode and really get people hooked.
Jon (21:35)
That's true. That would be a really good one resume series also because it would give you more time and scale to develop the characters in that book that you definitely need
Kristy (21:44)
Yeah.
Jon (21:45)
to feel it. So okay. All right. the dotted line.
Kristy (21:50)
Alright.
I've seen this on
Bookstagram before and people talking about I wish I could read this book for the first time. And this is actually a question I've never asked you. So if
Jon (21:58)
Okay.
Kristy (21:59)
you could erase your brain and read one of these books for the first time, which would it be?
Jon (22:05)
man, said
I mean, not to sound like a broken record, but I think I would choose Wild Dark Shore again.
Or that one or Kin. I think one of those two would
Kristy (22:15)
Hm.
Jon (22:16)
be the ones that if I could like erase my brain and start fresh, I think those would probably be my choices.
I think the reason I'm saying that is I think I would want to read Wild Dark Shore instead of listen to it and see how different that experience was.
Kristy (22:30)
Hmm. Fair.
Jon (22:33)
And Kin, don't know if it was just like the moment or the time or the pressure to get it done within, you know, for the podcast episode. But like there's just something about it where I felt like I wasn't totally
in the story and I think I would like to give myself an opportunity to sink into it more. So
what about you? Which one would you like to control alt delete?
Kristy (22:54)
I would pick Her Last Breath because I think that any of the books besides that one, I could reread right now, and then still enjoy and still find new things. And I'm not saying that I couldn't with Her Last Breath but there's this dread and anxiety that you can't replicate when you know what's gonna happen in a thriller.
Jon (23:16)
Totally agree. Yeah.
Kristy (23:17)
So
like Whistler again, we both said favor of the season. I will reread Whistler fall in love with Eddie Triplett and Daphne all over again. Totally. I could reread Kin and The Burning Side and The Pirate Queen and really enjoy those books again. not saying I couldn't reread Her Last Breath and
not enjoy it, but it just wouldn't be the same. Yeah.
Jon (23:37)
Yeah, it's very different. Yeah. I
I agree with that. Okay. Makes sense. It's a good one.
Kristy (23:42)
So what books will you be reading during the break?
Jon (23:45)
So historically, my answer to this question is none because I need a break. That is what the break is for.
Kristy (23:52)
Mm-hmm.
Jon (23:53)
However, I have found a little more mental capacity in my life of late. And so I have two books that are coming on Monday that I am going to commit. I chose by myself
Kristy (24:03)
that you chose my first
Jon (24:07)
and bought with my own money.
Kristy (24:09)
Books I pick for myself
to read.
Jon (24:13)
Boringest podcast ever.
Kristy (24:14)
Well this is news to me.
Jon (24:17)
and they've both been sitting in my Good reads, want to read for very long time. one is called The Maze by Nelson DeMille. I'm a fan of his writing. It's another detective,
Kristy (24:27)
Yeah, you've read a lot of his.
Jon (24:29)
John Corey novel.
I I liked his character a lot, so
so that one's coming, and then another one that's actually rated really high. I want to say it's like four point two, maybe on Goodreads, which is kind of crazy for what it is. But it's a book by Michael Mann, the director Michael Mann, who made a movie in 1995 that I've is still in my top five movies of all time called Heat. And he wrote a book that is
Kristy (24:51)
Hmm. I've never seen it.
Jon (24:53)
like shocker that is
like a continuation of that story post the events that happened in the movie.
Kristy (25:02)
okay.
Jon (25:03)
and so there was there's a character that survived on that film. And so the detective is not gonna stop basically until he finds this other like remaining character that's part of this crew. so that's very intriguing to me. I love the movie and it was rated really well. So I'm in I'm very interested to read that one. So
Kristy (25:21)
Mmm, okay,
okay.
Jon (25:23)
Yeah. Woo woo, go me.
Kristy (25:25)
Good job.
Jon (25:27)
still five.
what about you? I mean, you probably have forty books left on your list to read we're in break, so can you even answer this question?
Kristy (25:35)
I mean, I can give you a couple, but yes, I will be gone through We will
Jon (25:38)
We don't have enough time to go for through all that.
Kristy (25:40)
be gone through the holiday, so I'll be coming back in January. So between now and then in the year, I have 20 books. I don't wanna say I have 20 books to read because I definitely don't think that
Jon (25:49)
Yeah, you have your goal.
Kristy (25:50)
I well, I have a goal, but I also just love to read. So it's not like it's not a burden. But
the new John Green book, the new Emily St. John Mandel book. I'm not saying those will be on season six lineup, but I'm not not saying that.
Jon (26:05)
Not saying.
You went to go see John Green here in DC, didn't
Kristy (26:09)
I did.
Jon (26:09)
you? Yeah.
Kristy (26:10)
Yes. I think John Green is amazing. I think he's an amazing writer. think he's amazing human. This is his first adult novel. His others
are YA. So if you're not familiar with him, you probably have heard The Fault in Our Stars though. And
also wrote a book about tuberculosis that was actually really great.
Jon (26:31)
I I feel like that book be kinda became a cultural phenomenon to some degree. Like a subcultural thing.
Kristy (26:35)
A little bit. I I think so. Yep.
And I am actually also seeing Emily St. John Mandel this month too. She is DC is one of her stops on her tour. So I'm
Jon (26:45)
Nice.
Kristy (26:46)
going to that. And of course, there's the new ACOTAR book that is coming out. And there is a holiday Abby Jimenez book that is coming out.
And I I think I want to reread The Will of the Many and The Strength of the Few because
Jon (27:06)
Okay.
Kristy (27:06)
those are really they're really long and I really like them. But the second book in that series is r I mean not only is it long, there's a lot going on and I want to go understand it better, I think.
Jon (27:20)
The Will of the Many was actually I contemplated if that was one that I would read over the break also, 'cause you you really enjoyed it and you said you think I would enjoy it too, but
Kristy (27:29)
You would really like that book.
Jon (27:31)
it is it's a doozy but maybe we'll see.
Kristy (27:33)
Yeah. It
is really good though.
Jon (27:36)
I believeth you.
Kristy (27:37)
All right, so since part of the idea of this podcast is to get more husbands to read, which story do you feel is the most accessible for someone who doesn't read often?
Jon (27:49)
I think probably Her Last Breath would be the obvious obvious isn't the right word. would be my choice.
Kristy (27:54)
Addictive.
Jon (27:55)
Yeah, would be my choice for that. It's a quick read, it's not a complex read, it's a really compelling story. You could easily talk about it with your partner and engage in conversation and not just read the book kind of for yourself. So
I think that one's fun. There's like a murder mystery to it kind of thing. And who doesn't love that? to the men out there who may only be interested in nonfiction reading or anything like that. This one, Her Last Breath feels very approachable.
What would be your answer to that? As a wife who gives books her husband to read?
Kristy (28:29)
I married a reader. I think
Jon (28:31)
There.
Kristy (28:32)
that is something that should be high on everyone's list in a partner personally. I do give you books to read. So I think what you're naming is correct, but I won't take that answer. I would say also Whistler for me, because while it is a character-driven book, I think it gives you this what happened.
And why there is a
I don't want to give like our not giveaway, but I wanna
Jon (28:55)
Yeah.
Kristy (28:55)
have to explain the story right now. But these two people haven't seen each other in a very long time. the question is why? Like what happened? So like there's also this mystery that you're trying to unravel as you're hearing about stories from the past and then like current day setting. So I feel like that can hook you and then
bring you along when you like learn about the different characters and in a different way than Her Last Breath does.
Jon (29:20)
I'd agree with that.
Kristy (29:21)
All right, so any final thoughts or maybe anything you wish we'd done differently this season?
Jon (29:27)
I really appreciated this season and the new authors. I appreciated that they were also new to you. I think that that gave us some really intriguing and enjoyable conversation to have because you were going in just as fresh as I was, not just on the book, but on the author themselves. I think we had a lot of great, honest and heartfelt conversations this season because of
the character driven books that you chose and that I'm learning to love.
Kristy (29:52)
And you learn to love.
Jon (29:55)
And I think I just appreciate that after two and a half years I guess of doing this that we're still doing it and we're still enjoying it. And I'm I I enjoy that it's a way that I can infuse
Something that you love so much and be part of be
Kristy (30:11)
Aww
Jon (30:11)
part of that with you.
Kristy (30:13)
What was such a good answer?
Jon (30:14)
Hand hearts.
Those are my final thoughts.
Kristy (30:17)
well that was a banger.
Jon (30:21)
That is the theme word of the season. That was a banger. That's
Kristy (30:23)
Yes, it is. You you coined that one.
Jon (30:28)
funny. Any final thoughts from you, my dear?
Kristy (30:32)
No, I would agree with what you're saying. I I think that we had some really rich dialogue this season. And I loved not only exposing you to new authors and authors we haven't talked about before, but myself included, as you mentioned, like having conversations about authors and even themes and topics that we hadn't dove into before here. So thought it was
Jon (30:54)
Yeah.
Kristy (30:55)
really good.
Jon (30:56)
Very good.
Kristy (30:57)
Well, that is a wrap on season five of Books I Make My Husband Read. As we've already mentioned, we will be taking a short break. We'll be back after the holidays,

Jon (31:35)
They will get funneled through my wife, who, you know, is the filter for the books I am able to read, but it would be fun to hear what other people might be.
Kristy (31:42)
I'll take it under advisement.
Jon (31:46)
What should I read? but yeah, and hey, if you're still listening and you still happen to be on our episode page, show page, just t go back over, scroll down, tap the stars. Free way to support the show and discoverability for other book lovers.

thank you for listening this season. We make this for you, and it doesn't exist without you.
Jon (32:08)
That's true. That's true.
Kristy (32:09)
Well, I guess that's
Jon (32:10)
That it
Kristy (32:11)
it.
Jon (32:12)
that is another episode in the books.
Kristy (32:15)
Well, who knows? Maybe one of these books will be the one your husband reads. Nailed it.
Jon (32:20)
way to twist it for the summary episode. Nicely done.
Nailed it. All right, it's time for football. Bye.
Kristy (32:29)
Take care. Bye bye.
